Within Their Wildest Dreams

One of the earliest visions of the 21st century corporation was shown in 1926. Fritz Lang's silent-film epic Metropolis takes place now, in the year 2000. Lang, working in Germany, created a futuristic city based on a mechanized society. An army of workers, dressed drably alike, live and work below ground, where they are slaves to giant machines. They do repetitive, boring, dangerous industrial work. The Master of Metropolis and other owners live in huge, luxurious skyscrapers. A dour vision, indeed.
