Dot Com Death Rattle
One of the Internet's top promoters is changing its tune. Forrester Research Inc., the Cambridge (Mass.) outfit known for its generally bullish forecasts, recently issued a report predicting the "imminent demise" of most small online retailers. Meanwhile, in a survey of 2,500 CEOs, Forrester reported that executives of dot-com firms lacked "depth, experience, and common business sense." Some specific problems cited by Forrester: lousy long-term planning, a reliance on "cliched" business models, and a "fanatical focus" on valuation as opposed to value.
