Last year the Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah, watched helplessly as a triple whammy hit his tiny, oil-rich country. Oil prices plummeted, steep currency depreciation throttled investments around the region, and a conglomerate run by his brother collapsed under $10 billion in unpaid bills. It was the worst crisis the sultanate ever faced.
