Brazil's decision to let its currency free-fall sent the U.S. markets soaring on Jan. 15. Traders wagered that the move would revive Brazil's economy and have ripple effects throughout the hemisphere. The Dow Jones industrial average gained 220 points, and the Brazilian market soared 28%--14% in dollar terms. U.S. computer stocks soared on Jan. 19 and 20, spurred by the Excite-At Home Corp. and AirTouch Communications-Vodafone mergers. The NASDAQ composite index climbed to record highs.
