Lean Times For Sumo

In Japan, O-zumo--"grand sumo"--is much more than a wrestling match between two heavies in loincloths. It's a sacred rite that dates back 1,500 years. Legend has it that the god Takemikazuchi won the island of Japan for the Japanese people in a sumo bout. Sumo wrestlers once entertained the Imperial family at the Imperial Court and butted heads near Shinto shrines to ensure bountiful harvests.
