Marjorie M. Scardino is in top form. The brassy American chief executive of British media giant Pearson PLC greets a visitor with a risque wisecrack. Scardino has come a long way. She says when she took the job in early 1997, she hated shareholder presentations, interviews, and other duties of a high-profile CEO. Now, she says: "I am having a wonderful time," in a voice that still retains a touch of her native Southern twang.
