Commentary: What Happened To That Bold Leader, Tony Blair?

With a 179-seat majority, Britain's Prime Minister Tony Blair can do almost anything he wants. But that has hardly seemed the case in the last few weeks. Blair remained strangely silent while speculation about his position on Europe buffeted the financial markets. On Oct. 27, Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown finally informed Parliament that Britain was in principle prepared to join the European Monetary Union but probably not until after the next general election.
