Turkey's Generals Draw A Line In The Sand

The Turkish military has quietly staged a bloodless coup against Islamist Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan. Although Erbakan and the coalition led by his Welfare Party remain in office, they are living on borrowed time. Spelling out the military's intentions on Apr. 29, General Kenan Deniz, head of Turkey's internal security services, told reporters: "Destroying fundamentalism is of life-or-death importance."
