A "dream team" may enact economic reforms at last

Thailand's new Prime Minister, Chavalit Yongchaiyudh, has taken the first step toward fulfilling his campaign pledge. The former Defense Minister had promised to recruit a "dream team" of financial advisers to restore confidence in the government and reverse Thailand's economic slump. So he has designated an all-star player as Finance Minister: Amnuay Viravan, a respected former Foreign Minister and executive chairman of Bangkok Bank Ltd. "He's Chavalit's one claim to legitimacy with middle-class voters," says Daniel M. Fineman, market strategist for Jardine Fleming Thanakom Securities in Bangkok.
