Investment Figures Of The Week

COMMENTARY

The stock market gave a big thumbs-up to a second term for President Clinton

and a Republican-controlled Congress. Both the Dow Jones industrial average and

the Standard & Poor's 500-stock index rallied more than 3% to reach new highs.

The Dow is now up almost 21% for the year. Anticipation of continued economic

growth, low inflation, and more deficit-cutting fueled the stock market's rise.

After rallying, bond prices took a hit on light buying of the Treasury's

offering of 10-year notes.
