Investment Figures Of The Week

COMMENTARY

Even with a big rally in the bond market, stocks lost some ground over the last

week. Hardest hit were over-the-counter issues, especially the technology

stocks. One explanation for the decline was selling by mutual funds, many of

which close their books on Oct. 31. Bucking the downtrend were financial

stocks, which got a lift from bonds. The sellers were busy outside the U.S. as

well. The week's biggest casualty was the Mexican stock market--down 5.1% for

dollar-based investors.
