The Ge Mitsui Alliance: Don't Call It Keiretsu
"Cozying up to Keiretsu" (International Business, July 22) captured an emerging U.S.-Japan business relationship wherein competition and cooperation go hand in hand in developing new businesses at home or winning big contracts overseas. You were right to call it "alliance capitalism," but wrong in featuring it in a stereotyped "keiretsu" context, since a rival's alliance often means breaking away from the traditional keiretsu bind.
