My elephant adventure began on a nippy midnight in April at the Long Island Rail Road yards in Sunnyside, Queens, in New York City. Freight trains don't go into Manhattan, so Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey unloads its circus train there, and the elephants lumber through the Queens-Midtown Tunnel and across town to Madison Square Garden. Led by King Tusk, whose ivory tusks are as thick as my arm, were 15 females, their trunks holding the tails of the beasts in front, forming an elegant gray knot.
