Suharto's Grip Is Loosening: Who Will Come Next?

After President Suharto's wife of 49 years died in late April, a frequent visitor to the 75-year-old leader remarked: "His face looks so sad--older, weaker, and lonely." So when Suharto flew to Germany in early July to undergo medical tests, few observers were surprised. Although doctors gave him a clean bill of health for a man his age, he's believed to suffer from a heart condition complicated by diabetes, kidney stones, and prostate ailments.
