Millions of upwardly mobile managers are propelling Central Europe's renaissance

Law degree in hand, Dorota Czekaj graduated from Crakow's Jagiellonian University in 1990 just as Poland's communist system collapsed. After toying with starting a company, she won a scholarship to study management and spent a year in Paris instead. Hearing that cosmetics maker L'Oreal wanted to sell in Poland, she convinced them she was the woman for the job. Now, at 29, she heads sales for all of southern Poland. "My future is open," she says. "Everything is coming to life."
