When Vitro bought Anchor Glass Container Corp. in 1989, the Monterrey glassmaker was hailed as Mexico's first multinational. But the $900 million Anchor purchase and an estimated $200 million investment in Banca Serfin, Mexico's third-largest bank, have proved disastrous. With this expansion drive Vitro wound up frittering away its Mexican blue-chip status.
