What Israel needs, Yassir Arafat once said, is a Charles de Gaulle. When the famed French general was faced with a bitterly divisive war of independence in French Algeria in the late 1950s, he made a decision that shocked those who supported him: a quick agreement with Algerian freedom fighters and a wrenching military withdrawal. Only de Gaulle, the very personification of French nationalism and military pride, could have pulled it off.
