He spent his second Christmas on earth in a morgue. When nearly 600 blacks brandishing AK-47s, traditional spears, and bush knives attacked Shobashobane in rural Izingolweni township on Dec. 25, 14-month-old Khiphokwakhe Mthethwa was strapped papoose-style to his mother's back. Outside their mud hut in the African National Congress stronghold, marauders were hacking people, raping women, looting and razing houses. Survivors recall the mother and baby fleeing from their blazing home. As they ran toward a shallow riverbed, bullets pierced their backs, killing them instantly.
