He promises he'll turn around Olivetti by yearend--or quit

Olivetti Chief Executive Carlo De Benedetti is working against time. Hailed as Europe's highest-flying technology entrepreneur in the 1980s, he is now struggling to save both his company and his job. With losses mounting for the fifth year at the $6 billion computer and telecommunications group, De Benedetti, 62, has promised to turn its computer operations around by yearend or quit. "I am prepared to take the consequences of what shareholders are willing to do," he told BUSINESS WEEK.
