Embryonic Media Empire

Thai media mogul Sondhi Limthongkul says he is risking $60 million of his own money to launch the Asia Times, which debuted in Hong Kong, Bangkok, and Singapore on Dec. 6. The English-language newspaper is part of a pan-Asian strategy that includes the magazine Asia Inc., Internet data services, and an $80 million broadcast satellite to be launched in 1997. The 48-year-old former journalist hopes to create the first integrated, non-Western media giant.
