Investment Figures Of The Week

COMMENTARY
      Oh, what a market. Despite profit-taking in high-tech stocks, a sharp sell-off
in Mexican stocks (a consequence of a sickening slide in the peso), and a
lackluster rally in Japanese equities, U.S. stocks vaulted to new highs. For
the week, the Dow industrials, still trailing the gains achieved this year by
      the broader Standard & Poor's 500-stock index, shot up 86 points--with 55 of
them coming on Nov. 8. Bonds rallied, too, as the likelihood that the Fed will
cut rates increased in the wake of weak retail sales numbers.
