Commentary: One Roof For All Economic Data

Buried deep in their massive 1996 budget, House Republicans have come up with a horrible idea--scattering Commerce Dept. statistics-gathering agencies throughout the government. The Bureau of Economic Analysis, which produces such critical data as the gross domestic product, would be shipped off to the Labor Dept. to be merged with its longtime bureaucratic rival, the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The Census Bureau would head to the Office of Management & Budget for next year only. Then, it would move once more, to an agency to be named later.
