A Shock For Utilities
The House, concerned that local utilities are gouging the Defense Dept., voted to end electric utility monopolies on Pentagon contracts. Rival energy companies say if they could bid, the Pentagon would shave its $2 billion annual electricity tab by more than 10%. But contract-holders are fighting the bill in the Senate by warning that lost military business will drive up residential rates.
