Fadal Attraction

FADAL ENGINEERING HAS BEEN a symbol of U.S. manufacturing's renaissance, blasting away foreign rivals to become a dominant maker of small verticle machining centers. Now, Fadal is selling out to Giddings & Lewis, the giant of the machine tool industry, for $180 million in cash. The sale could help cut estate and gift taxes for co-owners David and Larry DeCaussin, who want to retire, and will provide the company with capital to launch a new product line.
