The High Court Cries Age Bias

CHRISTINE MCKENNON, 62, AN ex-secretary, got relief at the Supreme Court, which on Jan. 23 backed her age-bias suit against Nashville Banner Publishing. The court decided the company could not bar Mc Kennon--whose job went to a younger woman--from collecting back wages on the basis of evidence that she had stolen confidential files. Antibias advocates applauded the decision but remain concerned that the high court may not be as sympathetic in other pending civil rights cases this term involving federal minority-contracting programs, school desegregation, and voting rights.
