Retreat On Regs

Comptroller of the Currency Eugene A. Ludwig is poised to retreat from a contentious plan to make lenders report race and gender breakdowns for small-business and farm loans. The new Community Reinvestment Act reg, proposed last fall, sparked protests from the industry and the Federal Reserve. But with the shift to the right in Congress, regulators say the reporting rules will likely be cut back or dropped when new CRA regulations are issued this year.
