Investment Figures Of The Week

COMMENTARY
Stocks staged a rather snappy performance--considering the chaos in the muni
market. At midweek, the Dow Jones industrials were virtually unchanged from a
week earlier, while the S&P index retreated, but only marginally. Asian stocks
also showed some strength, largely in response to the rise in the dollar. The
bankruptcy filing by Orange County sent the municipal bond market into a frenzy
on Dec. 7, with the Bond Buyer muni index falling 48 basis points, the sharpest
      decline in recent memory.
