Giant Strides Toward Smaller Electric Motors
AMERICAN SUPERCONDUCTOR Corp. is making progress toward electromagnetic wire coils for small, superefficient electric motors. On Oct. 13, the company, based in Westborough, Mass., said it had made a coil of superconducting wire that, when electrified, produced a magnetic field of 2.16 tesla. That figure exceeds the threshold of 2 tesla that is necessary for the type of motor American Superconductor hopes to develop with its partner, Reliance Electric Co.
