Baseball: A Modest Proposal
Gary S. Becker's proposal for "taxing" baseball's bottom-dwellers misses the strike zone by a wide margin ("Baseball: How to level the playing field," Economic Viewpoint, Oct. 10). It does nothing to motivate players, and it hurts the teams least likely to afford it. More to the point would be to drop each year's last-place teams to the Triple-A leagues, while bringing top Triple-A teams up to the majors. Maybe even the Chicago Cubs would get motivated to win a pennant.
