Quebec Secede? Don't Hold Your Breath

In response to the concerns raised in "Will Quebec really do it this time?" (International Business, Sept. 19), the Sept. 12 election results should put our American friends' minds to rest. Although the PQ did win, it did so unconvincingly, with 44.7% of the popular vote vs. 44.3% for the Liberals. This did result in their winning 77 out of 125 seats but indicates that Quebecers voted only for a change of government, not likely separation.

There is a proposed referendum in 10 months on separation, and again the markets will be concerned. But rest assured, the good people of Quebec, their pocketbooks in mind, will defeat it.
