This Software Lets Workers Shuffle Paper From Home
Market researcher LINK Resources Corp. estimates there are 6.6 million telecommuters in the U.S. However, for millions of employees whose jobs require them to handle large volumes of documents, such as insurance claims, working at home has not been a viable option. That's because transporting those documents to and from the employee's home has not been practical. Until now. Sigma Imaging Systems Inc., a New York-based software maker, has combined workflow-management software with document-imaging technology to come up with an answer for paper handlers.
The company's $2,000 OmniDesk Home Workstation software allows employees to work with document images from home and transfer them back to the office using modem-equipped PCs. Back at headquarters, workflow software dishes a steady stream of digital documents to home workers at the same pace as if they were physically in the office. Companies testing work-at-home programs include Empire Blue Cross & Blue Shield, Consolidated Edison, and Chase Manhattan Bank.
