Angles On Judging Design

Congratulations to Bruce Nussbaum for showing us just how subjective design competitions can be ("Winners," Annual Design Awards, June 6). While I applaud the efforts of BUSINESS WEEK and the Industrial Designers Society of America to intelligently review design's impact on business, it is somewhat ironic that each year it is left to the subjective judgment of a handful of designers to tell the business community what is good and what is bad design. While this year's jury may have been unusually divided, I am certain that it's not the first time the "pragmatists" battled the "design aesthetes" for superiority.
