For an impresario such as Ted Turner, the Apr. 14 launch of Turner Classic Movies was a messy affair. Standing on a platform in Times Square, Turner pulled a ceremonial lever to switch on his new cable network. But just then, two taxis crashed less than 100 feet away. Transfixed by the celluloid icons on a giant TV screen above the square, Turner seemed not to notice.
