Big Blue's top brass are discovering that Chairman Louis Gerstner has some distinctive motivational techniques. Gerstner berated a recent gathering of some 400 IBM managers from around the globe for not knowing who their competitors are, let alone how to beat them. Seeking to shake up complacency left over from the days when IBM was without peer, Gerstner made a cross-section of managers hold flags bearing the names of their fiercest competitors, according to several present. Gerstner then read aloud derogatory statements about the computer giant by rivals.
