By all rights, the gun-loving types at the National Rifle Association should be up to their bandoliers in both guns and butter. Membership has surged, spurred by fear of violent crime and anger over growing congressional support for gun control--most recently, the ban on certain semiautomatic weapons, which passed the House of Representatives by just two votes on May 5. Enrollment has jumped 40% over three years, topping 3.3 million.
