When Robert Olszewski interviewed for a job with Petrie Stores Corp. 17 years ago, he expected to meet a personnel manager of the Secaucus (N.J.)-based women's apparel company. Instead, he was ushered into a spacious office full of memorabilia, teddy bears, and the unmistakable aura of power. It was the office of the founder himself, Milton Petrie, who sat glaring at his applicant from behind a big formica desk. "I was in awe," recalls Olszewski, now senior vice-president. "It was like being escorted to a legend."
