These Servers Could Turn Cable Ads Into `Zip Code Tv'

The much-hyped Information Highway remains largely on the drawing boards, but the market for "video server" computers could be getting off the ground. In May, cable-TV providers Time Warner Inc. and Continental Cablevision Inc. plan to begin installing video servers--special computers with massive disk storage--to insert commercials automatically and selectively into their broadcasts. Using servers developed by SeaChange Technology Inc., a startup in Concord, Mass., the cable companies hope to save money by doing away with manual handling of videotapes.
