It has the makings of a French Watergate--if Gallic secrecy and decorum don't limit the revelations. Even so, a looming parliamentary probe of France's biggest commercial bank, Credit Lyonnais, could well end a political career or two. And it may shed deeply embarrassing light on the French government's role as the unseen puppeteer of business. "We're going to learn a lot about how the government operates," promises Francois d'Aubert, a centrist parliamentarian who hopes to head the expected investigation.
