Since 1986, average wages and salaries in the U.S., adjusted for inflation, have steadily declined. From the second quarter of 1986 to the fourth quarter of 1992, real wages and salaries for civilian workers dropped some 3.5%. Seeing their paychecks' purchasing power shrinking for the better part of a decade, no wonder Americans have felt a strong sense of economic distress.
