Getting old is better than the alternative, the adage has it. But while growing old still has plenty of disadvantages, its attendant burdens have been lessened over the past several decades through technological advances in medical care, age-discrimination legislation, and increased Social Security, disability, and medical payments. Obviously, society should assist the old who need help, but the U.S. and other rich nations have gone too far in catering to elders who are reasonably well off. This is imposing a heavy burden on young people that before long could lead to open warfare between the generations.
