Genes And Disease: A Major Find
French researchers have reached a major milestone on the map of the human genome. A team led by Dr. Daniel Cohen of nonprofit institute CEPH announced on Dec. 15 that it had determined reference points for 90% of the human genetic structure. Using Cohen's physical map, researchers will be able to cut years off the search for specific genes causing hereditary diseases such as diabetes and certain cancers. Results of the 10-year, $45 million project will be shared with other scientists free of charge.
