Investment Figures Of The Week

Upbeat economic news set off a wave of fear and loathing in the bond and stock
markets. Yields of 30-year Treasuries climbed to 6.12% on Nov. 3, on the heels
of news that new-home sales climbed 21% in September. Also, traders were
dismayed by a 0.5% increase in the index of leading indicators during
September. Reacting to the bad tidings in the bond market and related jitters
among utilities stocks, the stock market sank on Nov. 3, with the Dow Jones
      industrial average falling 36 points.
