One Burned Up Burger Baron

There's little at Carl Karcher Enterprises Inc. that does not bear the imprint of its founder. The walls of the company's 649 fast-food burger outlets--called Carl's Jr.--are covered with old photos, such as one of Carl N. Karcher peddling hot dogs on a Los Angeles street corner circa 1941. Even Karcher's religious beliefs permeate the company's Anaheim (Calif.) headquarters. A devout Catholic, Karcher installed a life-size statue of St. Francis of Assisi.
