Quiz time. What do corporate layoffs, massive debt, and senior executives from IBM, Eastman Kodak, Sears, General Electric, Phillips Petroleum, ITT, and Frito-Lay have in common? Answer: McKinsey & Co. Now I ask, how do you define success ("The McKinsey mystique," The Corporation, Sept. 20)? Defining and opening new markets and aggressively maintaining a confident, focused staff? Or is it corporate downsizing and dysfunctional borrowing?
There is at least one market that McKinsey has opened and expanded: corporate outplacement.
