Can the world agree on a standard for the next generation of television? That remains to be seen, of course, but a number of influential communications regulators are clearly hoping it can. The U.S. has the world's most advanced standard for transmission of high-definition television (HDTV), using the digital language of computers. Now, the Europeans are wondering whether they should switch to a digital transmission standard from their current analog one.
