By any measure, the U.S. is enjoying a healthy capital-spending recovery. While investment outlays plummeted in recession-racked Europe and Japan last year, American businesses boosted equipment spending by 7.5% in real terms. And this year, according to the Commerce Dept.'s latest survey, total real capital investment is slated to rise by an even greater 9.1%.
