Filling Attali's Guccis

Jacques Attali's resignation as President of the European Bank for Reconstruction & Development is opening up a free-for-all for the job. French politicians argue that since Paris gave up the headquarters to London, the post should go to a French notable, possibly Treasury chief Jean-Claude Trichet. Other board members are backing Citicorp Vice-Chairman H. Onno Ruding. European Community Economics Commissioner Henning Christophersen is also applying. One risk: After Attali's flamboyant style, the board could opt for a risk-averse successor who would barely improve the EBRD's loan record in eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union.
