When Richard King lost a contact lens recently, he called Lens Express, a Deerfield Beach, Fla., mail-order company. But since his prescription was more than two years old, Lens Express declined to sell him a lens without a new exam. And the eight optometrists King contacted near his West Texas home refused to release his prescription so that he could order directly.
