The Chinese Are Coming, The Chinese Are Coming

Near Orlando, just two miles from Disney World, the Magic Kingdom is about to meet the Middle Kingdom. Construction crews are building "Florida Splendid China," a 76-acre theme park complete with such attractions as a miniaturized Confucian Temple and Forbidden City--and a three-quarter-mile version of the Great Wall. The $100 million facility, due to open in December, is being funded by investors from Taiwan and China. Nearby, the Taiwanese are also putting up single-family homes and stores. The project has whetted the appetite of Florida's real estate community. "The Chinese are going to surprise everyone with how much dough they're going to invest," says Lewis M. Goodkin, a real estate consultant outside Fort Lauderdale.
