In the early 1980s, J. Thomas West helped make Data General Corp. synonymous with fast, low-priced minicomputers. A brilliant and intense computer engineer, West honchoed the design of Data General's Eclipse/MV series. At a critical moment, the machines put Data General back in the race with its larger rival, Digital Equipment Corp. West, meanwhile, became the unlikely hero of a best-seller, Tracy Kidder's The Soul of a New Machine.
